For the Instructor :

For the
instructor, the
readability and student appeal of this text
is balanced by
accuracy,
completeness of coverage, and currency.
Because presenting the most current research
and thought is
critically important in this field, a very real
advantage of a Second Edition is the ability to
integrate new findings within a contemporary framework,
instead of trying to add new
findings to a table of contents constructed as many as
twenty-five years ago. Completeness
of coverage is balanced by the recognition that one can
cover only so much information
in one quarter or semester. Still, faculty will find all
of the traditional topics of a biological psychology course, along with a few
surprises. For example:
■
Chapter 1
features
extensive coverage of research methods and technologies
in
biological psychology including the use of stem cells, accompanied
by a careful consideration of research ethics.
■
Chapter 2
covers the anatomy of the nervous system and its
evolution.
■
Chapter 5
offers
optional coverage of genetics and heritability not found
in many
comparable texts.
■
Chapter 8
Movement
offers current research on mirror neurons receives
considerable
attention, and relevance and
student interest are enhanced by the inclusion of
discussions of performance enhancing drugs and gene doping.
■
Chapter 10
includes a
discussion of attraction and romantic love within the
context
of sexual behavior. This chapter also offers very current coverage
of biological influences on parenting and sexual orientation.
■
Chapter 15
tells the
story of how research unraveled the mystery of
neurological
conditions caused
by TSEs, such as mad-cow disease and is unique in its
discussion of neurological assessment and rehabilitation.
■
Chapter 16
covers a
full range of psychological disorders including
schizophrenia, mood
disorders, ADHD, anxiety disorders, antisocial
personality disorder, and autism.
Instructor Ancillaries
To further serve
the needs of faculty, I have paid close attention to the
production of useful
ancillaries. As tempting as it was to farm these out in
the interests of time and sanity, I have
been personally involved with the production of
animations, PowerPoint ©
presentation
materials, the Instructors’ Manual, and the construction
of more than 2800 questions for
the Test Bank. Many of these questions have been piloted
in my own classes. My
questions reflect past collaboration with consultants
who specialize in test construction for
higher education, and I think you will find them a
refreshing change from the usual
test banks supplied with text books. The following
ancillaries give instructors the
tools to present course materials according to
individual preference:
■
Instructor’s
Resource Manual:
Save
time, streamline your course preparation and get
most from the text
by preparing for class more quickly and effectively. The
Instructor’s Resource Manual
contains: sample lecture outlines, ideas for classroom
demonstrations and handouts, and
suggestions for using outside resources in the
classroom.

■
Test
Bank:
The test bank
includes more than 2400 multiple-choice questions and
more than 400
short-answer and short-essay questions, New to the
Second Edition of the Test Bank are sets
of novel
illustration-based test items
(multiple choice, short answer, and
essay questions) that contain black and white versions
of figures in the text.

■
PowerLecture:
This one-stop lecture
and class preparation tool contains ready-touse
Microsoft©

media- enhanced presentation. The
CD-ROM also includes JoinIn©,
an interactive tool that lets you pose book-specific questions and display students’ answers
seamlessly within the PowerPoint slides
of your own lecture, in conjunction with the “clicker”
hardware of your choice, as
well as the ExamView®
assessment and
tutorial system, and guides you
step by step through the process of creating tests.
