We believe that what we have created is more than a textbook, it brings
into focus
Psychology's place in our dynamic world. Psychology as one of the 7
'hub sciences' is
an important contributor and resource in the quest for understanding.
Psychology joins
Medicine, Earth Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Social
Science in helping
to define, explain and predict the world around us.
Professor
William James brought together the many disparate fields
of Psychology in his ground
breaking text book "Principles of Psychology" (1890).
As the field grew, the many disciplines of
Psychology began to drift apart, becoming more
specialized and often fiercely territorial. Times
have continued to change and evolve our field
reflecting the many advances in science and
technology. Some of our greatest scientists have become
cross disciplinary in their search for
solutions. this text presents psychology as a unified
science that seeks a complete understanding
of the human mind, rather than as a
loosely organized set of autonomous subspecialties.
As psychology moves rapidly toward
maturity as an integrative, multidisciplinary
field, the introductory course offers an opportunity to
teach all of psychology in one place and at
one time to not only Psychology majors but it gives us
the opportunity to demonstrate the value
of Psychology to all majors. What is architecture
without an understanding of how people want to
live? What is medicine without a recognition of the
behavioral components of a patient?
This text reflects that evolution--and our excitement
about it
